Wake Up … Time is of the Essence

Time is one thing we can never get back.

Ephesians 5:14-16

14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. 15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

I decided that if I’m going to get anything accomplished, I will have to do something every day that attributes to my goal, because as each day goes by, that is time that I’ll never get back. Therefore, as Ephesians 5 states, I must wake up and get busy. Since learning a new language takes time, I had to rearrange my schedule. I’m not an avid television watcher. So I have to purposely include watching these French movies into my schedule. Even if I take an hour a day, that is moving toward the goal. Now, when I say ‘take’ an hour, I really mean ‘take‘ an hour.

The strange thing is, I can quickly rearrange my schedule when someone else needs me to do something for them, but when I need to do something for myself, I tend to say that I don’t have time. I used to work for a large company. I worked very hard for that wonderful place, and had very little time for myself. Today, that is changing. I’ve retired from that company and now I’m working hard for myself. There is something more that I have to do, and I am going to do it.

In my drive to learn French, the movie thing wasn’t working very well. I needed to listen to something that I already knew the English translation of. I needed to make a shift in direction. So, I dusted off one of my favorite tv sitcoms (on dvd), placed disc 1 in the dvd player and watched the first episode. This is going to work out just fine.

Looking back at Ephesians 5:14, we have to wake up when it comes to our accomplishments. There is something that God needs for us to do. It is our destiny. It is our call. But we will never realize that call if we are slow about acting in faith as we pursue our dreams. I don’t take the scripture as a suggestion. I take it as a sign from God — a letter written personally to me — a peek into the future — something to stop and listen intently to. Ephesians was writtten to every Christian that would read it. So, let’s wake up and see the Light that God is showing us!
